In my endless quest for coffee recipes, I’m always looking for different ways to caffeinate my world. Recently, Starbucks started recommending frappuccinos “affogato” style. When I do order a frappuccino (which is rare), I love adding a shot of espresso because it certainly elevates the flavor. Having a frappuccino “affogato” means the barista (hello!) pours the shot on top of the beverage instead of blending the shot into the drink.
But to my excitement, I discovered that an affogato is also a traditional Italian dessert. Oh, the uncultured suburban American that I am! An affogato is a simple combination of ice cream topped with hot espresso. The espresso and ice cream blend as the perfect contrast of hot and cold temperatures and differing textures.
To make the espresso, I used this espresso maker that I got for Christmas last year from my boyfriend. It’s a great little machine—compact and easy to use. The espresso comes out really well and I can quickly steam lattes in the morning. I do wish that there was more room to fit larger glasses on the espresso drip tray. I can’t even fit an actual mug. But I usually just use a measuring cup and that suffices just fine.
Today, I chose to use chocolate gelato instead of ice cream. Topped with espresso and chopped almonds, it’s like eating a mocha dessert with a bit of extra crunch. The creamy gelato and smooth texture of the espresso made a perfect afternoon dessert. My boyfriend and I made a little afternoon date out of making these luxurious treats!
Even during a busy week, it’s important to take little moments to spend quality time with the people you love. The little moments are the ones that build your relationships in between the milestones. We will definitely remember the important events in our life. But it’s the afternoon dates, quick coffee runs, and in-depth rush hour conversations in the car that build our relationship to make the milestones happen.
Take a moment today to treat you and a loved one to some delectable mocha affogatos together!
